Out on the sidewalk, we walked down towards the corner away from the smokers where we could be alone. Conner’s eyes were shining.
“The music just makes me feel lighter. You know what I mean? Like all the weight of the world just melts away and it’s just me and the music.”
I could feel someone watching us, the hair on the back of my neck standing on end.
I pursed my lips, trying to ignore it.
You want to spy on me, Silas? I hope you like what you see.
I wrapped my arms around Conner’s neck, leaning into his chest and his eyes widened in surprise. His cheeks blossomed a deep shade of red, but he didn’t hesitate, wrapping his arms around my waist and pulling me in close. His body was warm, radiating against the cold.
I could feel it coming - any second now Conner was going to place his soft, warm lips on mine. I held my breath in anticipation.
“Denora, I really need to speak with you…” Silas’ voice came from somewhere behind me.
I rolled my eyes.
“Go away, Silas.”
Conner blinked hard, confused as to what had just happened. He released me, turning his gaze to the tall, dark man standing behind me.
“What’s going on?” Conner’s eyebrows pulled down low over his eyes as he looked from Silas, to me, and back to Silas. I slid my arms down from his neck, resting my hand on his chest.
“Just give me a minute. I’ll be right back.” I said softly. Without waiting for an answer, I spun on Silas, shooting him with a glare of death. I marched towards him, grabbing him by the elbow, and pulled him across the street so we could talk in privacy.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?” I hissed. Silas flinched at the heated anger in my voice.
“Denora, I’m very sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt your date.”
“Why are you here?”
“I explained to you how my curse works. When a member of the bloodline is in danger, it’s like an extra sense - a burning in my brain. I’ve been feeling it for days and tonight it was overwhelming. I just wanted to make sure you weren’t in danger.”
“The only thing I’m in danger of is being kissed, and you just ruined any chance of that happening.”
“Denora, I’m telling you, something is wrong.”
“Yeah, something is definitely wrong, and I know what it is too! Are you so jealous of me spending time with another man that you resort to stalking me?”
Silas’ jaw set in a firm line. He clenched and unclenched his fists several times before taking a deep breath, “You are so unreasonably stubborn. Sometimes I don’t know whether I want to throttle you or kiss you…”
“I wouldn’t suggest either. Right now they’ll both get you a punch in the face.”
